South Montgomery County YMCA Building Photo

The Sterling Ridge Village Association is excited to welcome a new neighbor to our village, the second location of the South Montgomery County YMCA located at 8100 Ashlane Way near Branch Crossing off Woodlands Parkway. February 21 marks the official grand opening, but Sterling Ridge residents got a sneak preview of the facility at the February 9th SRVA Residents Meeting. The YMCA has graciously allowed SRVA to have its monthly resident meetings. Visit our Events page to see the date for the next meeting.

The mission of the YMCA is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Mike Roth, the District Membership Director, emphasizesSwim Center the "for all" aspect of their mission. He stated that their goal is to never turn anyone away who would like to participate in any YMCA programs such as general membership, day care, after-school child care or sports programs. The YMCA is able to provide for these needs through its Partners Campaign, and this year, they are trying to raise $340,000.

An exciting opportunity for The Woodlands residents is that joining the YMCA entitles them use of both locations: Branch Crossing and Shadowbend. Each location has unique features, such as a large indoor pool complex and aClimbing Center kids gym for older youth at Shadowbend; whereas, the Branch Crossing facility offers an outdoor pool complex and an extensive adventure climbing center. Both facilities offer a variety of fitness classes, totaling 165. Roth states that the YMCA is not a fitness center; in fact, fitness encompasses only 20% of what they do.

Having been in existence for more than 150 years, the YMCA has continually evolved and offered programs to serve the wants and needs of the community. The Woodlands residents have a unique opportunity to get involved with a brand new facility: become a tour guide or greeter, help coordinate special events, be a donor, join the Board of Directors or assist with fundraising. Many opportunities exist because of the second facility, so visit their website or call them today at 281-367-9622.
