Old Sterling Neighborhood
The Old Sterling Neighborhood exemplifies the "hometown" feeling. Several years ago, one industrious neighbor, Patricia Young, started a neighborhood Bunko group, and from that group, a number of neighborhood activities, and even traditions, has started.

Neighborhood Directory
As the neighborhood grew, Patricia and another neighbor circulated a form requesting information for a neighborhood directory and interest in various activities to encourage neighbors to meet. Patricia commented, "The purpose of the directory is to make it easier for our residents to know each other, helping us be good neighbors."

Yet another neighbor volunteered to create a neighborhood map with family names as well as a teenager service list. With the latter, families can find trusted babysitters, petsitters, etc., nearby.

Social Activities
According to Patricia, "The directory makes our neighborhood a more connected one, but that is just the first step. What makes Old Sterling a great, social neighborhood are our residents who have volunteered to coordinate the activities." For the ladies, a monthly Bunko group, a book club and a strictly social group meet monthly, all coordinated by different people. A neighborhood dinner club is also organized where multiple dinners with 8-10 couples are hosted throughout the neighborhood. Each month, the dinner groups include a different group of people, offering the chance to develop new friendships. In addition, a more casual happy hour for all neighbors is held monthly at our village restaurant, Perry's.

A few activities have become traditions. Some "mysterious " neighbor started the "Boo" tradition several years ago, where one neighbor leaves treats at someone's door with a note to "boo" someone else. Also, the entire neighborhood is invited to the annual Halloween party.

Safety Activities
Finally, a connected neighborhood is a safer neighborhood, and Patricia concurs: "I always feel happier living where I know my neighbors by name. I enjoy helping them and know that I have neighbors that I can count on to help me ... my friendships in the neighborhood have helped my family feel more secure in our neighborhood." Old Sterling actively participates in the National Night Out crime prevention activity and in Woodlands Watch.

Looking back, Patricia believes, "My reward has been great! I get to enjoy the hospitality of so many nice neighbors."
